Downloading programs from the Internet is fast and easy, but there are one or two basic things that need to be understood. The first is that, despite what anyone may have told you, and even despite what the folks at Microsoft say, the best place to download any file to is a directory on your C drive named "Downloads", not to "My Desktop". You may have to make this Downloads directory, but it will be worth it as you will see. Second, it is important to understand that "downloading a program" happens in two parts: first, what you download from the internet is not actually the program itself, it is the installation file for the program; you download the installation file (to the Downloads directory), then you run the installation file from within the downloads directory (by double-clicking on the installation file name) to install the program. It is the installation file that creates the program. All too often we get help requests for help from folks who think they have done the right thing by "downloading a program" to "My Desktop", only to find that each time they click on it, thinking they are going to run the program, they are actually running the installer again and again. There are a couple of additional benefits to using the Download directory method: the first is that you always know where a file has arrived when you've downloaded it, and the second is that once you have installed the new program you can get rid of the installation file if you wish.
